The gradual swelling of the Laminaria has been found to be far less traumatic than rapid dilation methods. The tents swell gradually up to four times their diameters and make and indulgent and symmetrical dilation of the cervical canal. Laminaria tents / Japonica tents diameters swell within the first six hours after insertion and may continue to grow for 24 hours in total. Laminaria tents / Japonica tents from Hayden Medical Inc. are 65mm long, pierced in one end and provided with a strong pure linen cord. The diameters are 3mm-9mm. Extra long laminaria (80 to 85mm) are also available in 5mm, 6mm and 7mm extra long.
